س: أولا، هل بالإمكان إعطاء القراء مقدمة حول اهتماماتك، وطبيعة عملك؟
فانيا: في المقام الأول لقد عملت في صناعة الأدوية لأكثر من 20 عاما في مجال ضمان الجودة. وخلفيتي التعليمية B.Sc. درجة في الكيمياء الحيوية العضوية. لدي الكثير من الهوايات، بما في ذلك الفن، القراءة، المشي في الطبيعة، الإهتمام بالحيوانات، التصوير، التطوع لصالح الأنشطة الإنسانية وأكثر من ذلك بكثير. لدي عائلة واثنين من الأبناء وهم ما يزالون يافعين، لذلك ساعات اليوم دوما غير كافية ...
س: متى وكيف بدأت القصة مع القادمين الجدد؟ وأتساءل عما إذا كنتي تعملين ضمن فريق متطوع أو لوحدك؟
فانيا:شاركت في سبتمبر 2015 عندما بدأت موجة كبيرة من العائلات السورية اليائسة بالفرار من الحرب والعبور من تركيا إلى اليونان عن طريق البحر. لقد وجدت قصصهم مدمرة وشعرت بالحاجة لتقديم المساعدة بطريقة أو بأخرى. تواصلت مع نشطاء دوليين عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي وبدأنا بتشكيل مجموعات وكذلك الانضمام إلى العديد من المتطوعين الدوليين وفي وقت لاحق، (متطوعين كنديين). في مجموعات الفيسبوك لدينا، سرعان ما كان السوريين والعراقيين والجنسيات الأخرى الذين كانوا يفرون من الحرب والصراعات ما بدأوا يطلبون منا مد يد العون. كان أمر لا يصدق أن تشهد قوة الفيسبوك ووسائل الإعلام الاجتماعية والقدرة التي خولتنا تلك الوسائل لمساعدة ودعم الناس حتى عن بعد. في وقت لاحق سافرت إلى ألمانيا، برلين (قطار الأمل) محملة ببعض التبرعات الكبيرة التي جمعتها للأطفال اللاجئين الذين يصلون إلى ألمانيا. كان الناس يسافرون لعدة أيام وأسابيع من خلال العديد من البلدان وكان المتطوعين يحيونهم في المحطة ... بحلول ذلك الوقت كان لي بعض الأصدقاء الألمان الرائعون ولكن أيضا عدد قليل من الذين استطاعوا الوصول من تركيا بمساعدتي ... كان حقاً لقاء لا يصدق يلمس شغاف القلب!
حتى يومنا هذا، هناك العديد من النشطاء والمتطوعين في جميع أنحاء العالم وخاصة في اليونان وتركيا ولبنان والأردن، مما يساعد في طرق لا تعد ولا تحصى، في محاولة لدعم الكثير من النازحين والأسر. نحن على تواصل ومنظمين بطرق مثيرة للإعجاب، وحقيقة وفي كثير من الأحيان نشعر وكأننا نحن كمنظمات شعبية تطوعية صغيرة نقوم بوظيفة المنظمات الكبيرة التي ليست موجودة بما فيه الكفاية وللأسف قد فشلت في مساعدة هؤلاء الناس.
إذا نظرتم إلى الوضع في المعسكرات اليونانية، فإن الناس يمضون فصل الشتاء الثالث وهم تحت الخيام ... ولولا مئات من المتطوعين الرائعين على المدى الطويل، لما تمكن العديد من الأسر اليائسة هناك من البقاء على قيد الحياة، وهم بالنسبة لي أصدقاء بكل اعتزاز ...
المساعدة التي نقدمها هنا في كندا هي إلى حد كبير من خلال إدارة الكفالات، وأيضا المشاركة المباشرة عندما تصل تلك الأسر إلى كندا، حيث تكون ما تزال بحاجة إلى الكثير من الدعم. بدأت بتشكيل فرق صغيرة من الناس الملتزمين محليا في منطقة تورونتو الكبرى، وكذلك في جميع أنحاء البلاد التي تساعدني في رعاية وجمع التبرعات. كما أنشأت مجموعة على الفيسبوك تسمى مجموعة الكفلاء الكندية التي من خلالها ندعم الأسر التي نرعاها، وكذلك لتبادل الخبرات، ودراسة وضع الحالات، ومعرفة سياسات الهجرة وأكثر من ذلك بكثير. وليس الكنديين فحسب، فهناك بعض الناس المتحمسين من الولايات المتحدة الذين انضموا إلينا وكذلك أصدقاء من أوروبا واستراليا ... ونحن جميعا نعمل على تحقيق نفس الهدف لمساعدة أكبر عدد ممكن من الناس قدر ما نستطيع. ليس لدينا أي تمويل أو أي دعم غير ما نحمله من تعاضد وروح معنوية عالية وعاطفة نبيلة بيننا. بعض من أصدقائي المحليين في أوكفيل وبرلنغتون وتورنتو يقومون بعمل ممتاز في تنظيم التبرعات، وتقديم الدعم، وتوسيع الصداقات.
وقد شاركت في أنشطة ومجموعات لمساعدة كل من منظمة GARs (اللاجئين بكفالة حكومية) وكذلك الأسر التي ترعاها جهات خاصة. الاحتياجات ماسة ولانهائية ونحن نحاول الاعتماد على اتصالات وشبكات بعضها البعض لمساعدة أكبر عدد ممكن من الناس بقدر ما نستطيع. في حين أن العديد من هذه الأسر ما يزالون ينتظرون الوصول ومع ذلك نحاول دعمهم في البلدان التي يعيشون فيها الآن، وذلك من خلال ربطهم بوظائف، وإرسال التبرعات والهواتف وأجهزة الكمبيوتر المحمولة، وقبل ذلك كله، نحن نقدم الصداقة والاستماع لمشاكلهم مع بذل التعاطف اللازم، ودعم أحلامهم وأهدافهم المستقبلية ... هناك الكثير الكثير من الصداقات لا يصدق حجمها، شكلناها حيث كل واحد منا كمتطوع يقف خاشعاً أمام هذه التجربة الغنية.
س: ما هي الدوافع والقيم التي شجعتكم على رعاية الكثير من القادمين الجدد إلى كندا؟
فانيا: جئت إلى كندا مع أسرتي الشابة أثناء الحرب الأهلية في يوغوسلافيا. لقد عشنا مرارة الخسارة والدمار واليأس. كان والديّ يتيمين من الحرب العالمية الثانية وشهدوا أحداث فظيعة لا يجوز أن يسمح لأي طفل أن يراها.
لقد تربيت في حضن اثنين كان الحب يغمر قلبيهما، تربية أساسها التسامح وتقبل الآخر والإنسانية.
لقد كانت القيم التي تربيت عليها وقلبي دائما إلى جانب النازحين، والمعانين من الناس والفقراء والمشردين الذين فقدوا كل ما لديهم بسبب الحرب والرعب والمأساة، دون أي ذنب اقترفوه، فقط وببساطة لأننا ولدنا ونشأنا في مكان معين، في زمان معين، وهذا لا يعني أننا لا نستحق فرصة في العيش الطبيعي والسلمي تماما كما أن الناس الذين ولدوا ولديهم امتيازات يجب أن يدركوا أنهم لا يقدموا إنجازات خاصة، ولا ينبغي اعتبارها أمرا مُسلماً به.
التسامح، الفرص، الحرية وحقوق الإنسان. هذا مجرد جزء يسير مما أعتقد أننا بحاجة للسعي إليه، بغض النظر عن المعتقدات الدينية أو عدم وجودها، لون البشرة، والجنسية، والوضع الاقتصادي، والجنس، والخلفية والجذور ...
لذا، وبإيجاز، كانت مشاركتي مجرد ردة فعل إنسانية على واحدة من أكبر الأزمات الإنسانية في عصرنا. بدأت صغيرة ونمت ...
ومن المحزن أن الاتجاهات السياسية والاقتصادية الحالية في العالم تظهر أننا - الناس في كل مكان - أمامنا الكثير من الواجبات علينا القيام بها...
س: ما هي الصعوبات والتحديات الرئيسية التي قد تواجهكم في كفالة عائلة جديدة؟
فانيا: هناك العديد من التحديات التي تعترضنا دوما. من إيجاد وتشكيل فريق رعاية ودعم الأسرة، إلى جمع وتأمين الأموال من خلال جمع التبرعات التي لا نهاية لها ... إلى استمارات معقدة متعددة تحتاج تعبئتها لكل فرد ... إلى الحواجز اللغوية، والإجراءات الطويلة، والمشاكل العقلية والعاطفية التي يعاني منها الناس ، والمسافات، وقضايا الاتصال والتواصل وهلم جرا. وبما أننا جميعا متطوعيين،ولسنا استشاريي هجرة متدربين لذا يستغرق الأمر معنا وقتا طويلا لتعلم وفهم إجراءات ومتطلبات الهجرة المعقدة.
في الوقت الراهن، فإن أكبر عقبة هي البدء بأي كفالة جديدة وخاصة مع تغيير البرنامج الخاص بالسوريين والعراقيين في يناير 2017. ما لم يكن لدى الأسرة وضع اللاجئ الكامل والمعترف به، فإنها تحتاج أن تكون تحت اتفاقية SAH حامل اتفاقية الرعاية. وتكون عادةً الكنائس أو الجمعيات الكندية الكبيرة التي لها علاقة مع العديد من الكنائس التابعة ويسمح لها من قبل برعاية اللاجئين إلى كندا. هناك قيود، حيث أن أعداد الأشخاص الذين يتقدمون بالطلبات لانهائية وحصص الأماكن المتاحة للكفالة محدودة حسب مخصصات سنوية موافق عليها.
س: كم عدد الأفراد أو الأسر التي ساهمتي برعايتها؟
س:كيف استطعتي تأمين تكاليف متطلبات الإستقرار لهذا العدد الكبير من الناس؟
فانيا: لدي تسع (9) حالات وقّعت عليها رسمياً . بعضها مؤلف من أسر كبيرة (7) أفراد وبعضها عائلات صغيرة من فرد أو فردين. المتوسط هو من 3-4 كأفراد أسرة.
وقد ساعدت أيضا العديد من العائلات والأفراد الآخرين من خلال تشكيل مجموعات رعاية خاصة أو العثور على حملة اتفاق الرعاة في كندا، من الساحل إلى الساحل، على استعداد لرعايتهم. في النهاية، لدي حوالي 45-50 شخصا ملفاتهم قيد الدراسة للمجيئ إلى كندا وهي ملفات ترتبط مباشرة بجهودي المتعلقة بالرعاية والأنشطة المختلفة.
كما ويتم تحديد الأموال اللازم تجميعها من قبل IRCC (الهجرة الكندية) وكان لي شخصيا دور في تنظيم قدر كبير من جمع التبرعات. حيث أن الكفالة الخاصة ليست مؤهلة للمساعدة الحکومیة (علی عکس الحالات التي ترعاھا الحکومة)، لذا یجب أن تکون جمیع الأموال متوفرة ومجمعة قبل تقدیم الملف إلی لجنة IRCC. وقد تم عقد العديد من الفعاليات، والكثير من صفحات "Go Find Me " - وتواصلت مع الكثير من الكنائس في بعض الحالات، كما استخدمت ما يسمى "التبرعات العينية" التي تسمح لنا بتخفيض الأموال اللازمة لكفالة كل أسرة.
كانت عملية استنزاف طويلة ولا تأتي ثمارها بسهولة. وما زلنا حاليا نجمع التبرعات لثلاث عائلات مختلفة، وكذلك جمع الأموال للكثير من الناس لدعم حاجاتهم اليومية، وفي نفس الوقت نبحث عن أماكن متوفرة من مخصصات SAH ونسعى جاهدين من خلال مجموعات G5 الخاصة التي لا تزال على استعداد لتقديم المساعدة.
س: هل يمكن أن تعطينا قصة ملهمة عن عائلة معينة أو فرد قمتي بكفالته مؤخرا؟
فانيا: نعم، أستطيع أن أخبركم عن علاقة صداقة وكفالة لأسرة سورية مكونة من سبعة أفراد نزحوا في بلدين مختلفين. عملت بلا كلل على قضاياهم وكانت التحديات كثيرة. كانت هناك حاجة إلى الكثير من الأموال، لم نكن متأكدين مما إذا كانت هناك رحلات جوية متوفرة خارج شمال العراق، كانت تشير بيانات دراسة الملفات على الانترنت إلى مدة زمنية تصل ل 48 شهرا، وبعض الأفراد لا يتكلمون الإنكليزية على الإطلاق مما جعلنا نواجه صعوبات جمة في إعداد الملفات.. لم تكن هناك قصص نجاح كثيرة في تلك الفترة يمكن الحديث عنها...
وقد تم تظافر جهود لا تصدق من قبل فريقي للكفالة الخماسية وأيضا دعم كبير من كنيسة

في برلنغتون، أونتاريو وكذلك SAH، ومنظمة CMA of Canada. لقد عملنا معاً بجد ولزمن طويل على أمل الحصول على نتيجة جيدة.
وصل جميع أفراد العائلة أخيرا بعد عامين تقريبا، على مدى شهرين فيما بينهم فقط، وصلوا من شمال العراق وتركيا. وهم يعيشون الآن على بعد 10 دقائق من بيتي. الأطفال يذهبون إلى المدرسة. الجميع يتعلم اللغة الإنكليزية، يبحثون عن عمل أو يعملون بالفعل ...
لقد كانت تجربة مدهشة لكل من شارك في هذا الإلهام ...
هناك عشرات من القصص التي يمكن أن أشاركها كل واحدة منها تثلج الصدر أكثر من الأخرى.
س: في الآونة الأخيرة، رفض مسؤولو الهجرة مئات ملفات طالبي اللجوء، من وجهة نظركم، من المسؤول عن خطأ كهذا؟ ومن المسؤول عن حل هذه المسألة الشائكة؟
فانيا:
لا أقول إن المئات من الملفات رُفضت. فعلى وجه الدقة، أعلنت هيئة IRCC في كانون الثاني / يناير 2017 أنه سيتم سحب ميزة الإستثنائية المؤقتة للكفالة الخاصة بالسوري والعراقيين، بحيث يخضعون لنفس المعايير التي يتمتع بها جميع اللاجئين الآخرين في العالم. وهذا يعني أنه من الآن فصاعدا، يتوجب على رعايا هاتين الجنسيتين الحصول على وضع لاجئ معترف به بالكامل من أجل التأهل للحصول على الكفالة الخماسية الخاصة G5 أو (الكفالة الإجتماعية) CS، والتي لا يستطيع معظم الناس للأسف أن يحصلوا عليها دون سنوات من الانتظار. الآلاف من اللاجئين في جميع أنحاء العالم لديهم تلك الوثيقة وبذلك يتم تحقيق توازن الفرص بين الجميع مرة أخرى. لا يزال من الممكن أن تتحقق الكفالة من خلال منظمة SAH ولكن بصعوبة بالغة لشح الأماكن المتاحة. هذا هو السبب الذي أدى إلى شعور العديد من الناس بأنهم فقدوا فرصتهم. لا يزال البرنامج مفتوحا، ولكن عدد المتقدمين فوق التصور..
وقد اتخذت القرارات لتحديد عدد الأشخاص المقبولين كملتمسي لجوء سياسي. ونود أن نرى المزيد من الجهود المنظمة لمساعدة أعداد أكبر، بالتأكيد.
ربما يوجد طرق لتحسين العملية والتعجيل بها، والنظر في تخصيص حصص أكبر، وتوظيف المزيد من موظفي الهجرة لمعالجة الملفات. وقد حاولنا الضغط في الماضي عبر وسائل الإعلام وتقديم الالتماسات، ولكن ليس لذلك تأثير كبير أو قدرة على تغيير القرارات. إذ الحصص والأنظمة
تُحدد من قبل وزارة الهجرة.
كما نعرف؛ ليس الجميع في كندا يدعم توافد المهاجرين واللاجئين ولعل الحكومة الكندية تحاول تحقيق التوازن بين الاستعداد للمساعدة وبين بعض أطراف المعارضة واعتراضاتهم على حصصهم وسياسات الهجرة ...
ونحن كمتطوعين وناشطين نود بالتأكيد أن نرى كندا تدعم المزيد من الناس الفارين من ويلات الحروب والإرهاب، طالما أنهم يثبتون تسامحهم، والعمل الجاد والرغبة في جعل كندا وطنهم والمساهمة في ازدهارنا.
س: ما هي التوصيات أو الرسائل التي ستعطيها للقادمين الجدد في كندا؟
فانيا:
احتضان الثقافة والناس والبلد. التعلم والدراسة.
الحفاظ على التقاليد الخاصة بك في المنزل، ولكن إبقاء عقلك مفتوحاً ومتسامحاً.
تقبل القيم الكندية والعمل الجاد. مساعدة أولئك ممن هم أقل حظا منك.
والباقي يأتي مع مرور الوقت.
س: في هذا الصدد، ما هي الرسالة الإنسانية التي تودين اوجيهها للكنديين عموما؟
فانيا:
المزيد يتحقق من خلال التسامح والتعاطف والود بين الناس أكثر من أي طريقة أخرى.
إعطاء الجميع فرصة. نحن لا نعرف متى قد نحتاج إليها.
الناس لا يغادرون بلادهم ويخاطرون بحياتهم دون سبب. الحروب مدمرة.
لقد أظهر السوريون وبأعدادا كبيرة استعدادهم للتكيف بشكل جيد، والعمل بجد ولهم تاريخ من الرحمة والترحيب بالثقافة من بلدهم.
وأنا ممتنة حقا أن أعتبر العديد من السوريين والعراقيين والأفغان أصدقائي وأسرتي.

Canadian Days has the pleasure to meet with the distinguished humanitarian activist, Mrs. Vania Davidovic.
Q: First, Could you please
give the readers a preface about your interests, and what kind of job do you have?
Vania:
I have been working in Pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years, primarily in the field of Compliance and Quality Assurance. My educational background includes B.Sc. degree in bio-organic Chemistry. I have many interests and hobbies, including art, reading, walks in the nature, animals, photography, volunteering for humanitarian activities and much more. I have a family and two grown sons who are still young so there are never enough hours in a day…
Q: When and how did the story with newcomers begin? and I wonder whether you work in a volunteer team or by yourself?
Vania:
I got involved in September 2015 when a large wave of desperate families from Syria started fleeing the war and crossing from Turkey to Greece by sea. I found their stories devastating and I felt the need to help in some way. I connected with international activists via social media and we started forming and joining many international and later local (Canadian) volunteer groups. In our Facebook groups we soon had Syrians, Iraqis and other nationalities who were fleeing war and conflicts, asking us for help. It was incredible to witness the power of Facebook and social media in ability it gave us to help and support the people even from afar. Later I travelled to Germany and Berlin’s Train of hope with some large donations I collected for refugee kids arriving to Germany. People were travelling for days and weeks through many countries and volunteers were greeting them at the station… By then I had some great German friends but also a few who made it from Turkey with my help… It was a truly incredible and touching reunion!
To this day, there are many activists and volunteers around the globe and especially on the grounds in Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, helping in countless ways, trying to support so many displaced people and families. We are connected and organized in very impressive ways and in fact it often feels like our small volunteer grassroots organizations are doing the job of the big organizations which are not present enough and sadly have failed these people.
If you look at the situation in the Greek camps, people are living their third winter under tents… If it wasn’t for hundreds of amazing long- term volunteers, people I proudly call my friends, many desperate families and people would stand even less chance of surviving there…
The help we offer on our end here in Canada is largely through managing sponsorships, but also direct involvement when families arrive, as they still need a lot of support. I started by forming small teams of committed people both locally in GTA, as well as across the country that are helping me with sponsorships and fundraising. I also started a group on Facebook called Canadian Sponsors group through which we support our sponsored families, as well as exchanging experience, status of cases, knowledge about immigration policies and so much more. And it’s not all Canadians either- there are some enthusiastic people from the US that joined us as well and friends from Europe, Australia … We all work towards the same goal of helping as many people as we can. We have NO funding and support other than our bond and the spirit and passion between us. Some of my local friends in Oakville, Burlington and Toronto are doing excellent jobs in organizing donations, offering support, extending friendships.
I have been involved with activities and groups to assist both GARs (Government sponsored refugees) as well as privately sponsored families. Needs are infinite and we try to rely on each other’s connections and networks to help as many people as we possibly can. While many of them are waiting for arrival we are trying to support them in countries where they currently live, by connecting them to jobs, sending donations, phones, laptops… But above all, we are offering friendship and listen with empathy, supporting their dreams and goals for the future…There are so many incredible friendships we have formed that each one of us volunteers feels enriched and humbled by this experience.
Q: What are the motives and values that encouraged you to sponsor so many newcomers into Canada?
Vania:
I came to Canada with my own young family during the civil war in Yugoslavia. We have lived through loss, devastation and hopelessness. My own parents were orphans of World War II and witnessed terrible things that no child should ever be forced to see.
I was raised by two amazing, loving people to believe in tolerance, acceptance and humanity.
My values and heart have always been on the side of the displaced, of people suffering, of the impoverished and the homeless, of people who have lost all they had to war, terror, misfortune, through no fault of their own. Simply because we happen to be born and raised in a certain place at certain time, it doesn’t mean that we don’t deserve a chance at normal and peaceful living- just as people born with privileges should realize that they do not present their own achievements and it should not be taken as granted.
Tolerance. Opportunity. Freedom and human rights. This is just a small fragment of what I believe we need to strive towards, regardless of religious beliefs or lack thereof, skin tone, nationality, economic situation, gender, background and roots…
So in a summary, my involvement was simply a human reaction to one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time. It started small and it grew…
Sadly, current political and economic trends in the world show that we –people everywhere- have a lot to work on…
Q: What are the major difficulties and challenges you may encounter in sponsoring a new family?
Vania:
There are many challenges along the way. From finding and forming a support sponsorship team for the family, to raising and securing funds through endless fundraising… to multiple complex forms that need to be done for each individual… to language barriers, the lengthy process, mental and emotional issues that many of these people struggle with, distance, communication issues and so on. Since we are all volunteers are not trained Immigration consultants it takes time to learn and navigate the complex immigration procedures and requirements.
Currently, the biggest obstacle is starting ANY new sponsorship as private program changed for Syrians and Iraqis in Jan 2017. Unless a family has a full and recognized refugee status they need a Sponsorship Agreement Holder on their side to be sponsored. These are usually Churches or large Canadian associations that have connection with many affiliated churches pre-authorized to sponsor refugees to Canada. There are limitations, as the numbers of people applying is infinite and the number of spots available for sponsorships limited by quotas approved on annual bases.
Q: How many individuals or families have you sponsored
and how did you provide the settlement fund for this huge number of people?
Vania:
I have officially nine (9) cases I have signed for; some are bigger families (7) and some small units of one or two members. Average is 3-4 family members.
I have also helped many other families and individuals by forming private sponsoring groups or finding Sponsorhip Agreement Holders in Canada, coast to coast, willing to sponsor them. In the end, I have about 45-50 people in process for Canada that are directly connected to my sponsoring efforts and activities.
The funds required to be raised are determined by IRCC (Immigration Canada) and I’ve personally had to organize a great deal of fundraising. Private sponsorships do not qualify for government assistance (unlike government -sponsored cases) so all funds have to be in place before a case can be submitted to IRCC. Many events were held, a lot of “go fund me” pages- I have reached out for support to churches in certain cases, and also used the so-called “in-kind donations” that allow us to reduce the funds needed per each family.
It is a draining and long process and it does not come easily. We are still currently fundraising for three different families, collecting funds for many people in day-to day support, looking for SAH spots and seeking private G5 groups still willing to help.
Q:Could you give us an inspiring story about a certain family or individual you have recently sponsored?
Vania:
Yes, I can tell you about our befriending and sponsoring a Syrian family of seven that was displaced in two countries. I worked tirelessly on their cases and the challenges was many; they were physically separated, lots of funds were needed, we weren’t sure if flights could happen outside of North Iraq, processing times online where indicated as 48 months, some members didn’t speak any English which made forms harder to prepare… There weren’t many success stories from that specific location out there to reassure us…
Incredible efforts were pulled together by my devoted sponsoring team of five and also great support from the Compass Point Bible Church in Burlington, ON as well as the SAH, CMA of Canada. We worked hard and long, all together, hoping for a good outcome.
All of the family members finally arrived after almost 2 years, just 2 months apart, from both North Iraq and Turkey. They now live 10 minutes away from my home. The kids are going to school; everyone is learning English, searching for job or already working …
It has been amazing experience for everyone involved and such an inspiration…
There are dozen more stories that I could share and one is most heart-warming then the last.
Q: Recently, the immigration officials rejected hundreds of asylum seeker files, from your point of you, whose fault was it? And who is in charge of solving this big matter?
Vania:
I would not say that hundreds of files are rejected. To be precise, in Jan 2017, IRCC announced that temporary exceptional rule for private sponsorships of Syrian and Iraqi people will be withdrawn and they will have the same criteria as all other refugees in the world. This means that from then on, they also had to have a full, recognized refugee status in order to qualify for private G5 or CS (Community sponsor) sponsorship, which most people sadly cannot achieve without years of waiting. Thousands of refugees around the world do have it and so it was done to balance out everyone’s chances again. It is still possible to be sponsored through the SAH but much harder to achieve as spots are scarce. This is the reason why many people felt they lost their chance. The program is still open- it’s just the numbers that are overwhelming…
The Decisions made to determine what number of people would be accepted as asylum seekers, are political. We would like to see more of the organized efforts to help larger numbers, certainly.
There are probably ways to improve and expedite the process, to consider larger quotas and employ more immigration officers to process the files. We tried to put some pressure in the past via media and petitions, but do not have much influence or ability to change the decisions. Quotas and regulations are decided by the Ministry of Immigration.
As we know; not everyone in Canada supports larger numbers of immigrants and refugees and Canadian Government is probably trying to balance between willingness to help and some opposition and objections to their quotas and immigration policies…
We as volunteers and activists would certainly like to see Canada supporting even more people escaping wars and terror, as long as they show and prove that they are tolerant, hard- working and willing to make Canada their home and to contribute to our prosperity.
Q: What recommendations or messages would you give to newcomers in Canada?
Vania:
Embrace the culture, people and country. Learn and study.
Keep your traditions at home, but keep your mind opened and tolerant.
Accept Canadian values and work hard. Help those less fortunate then you.
The rest will happen with time.
Q: In this regard, what humanitarian letter would you like to convey to Canadians in general?
Vania:
More is achieved through tolerance, compassion and empathy between people than in any other way.
Give everyone a chance. We never know when we may need it.
People don’t leave their country and risk their lives with no reason. Wars are devastating.
Syrian people have been showing in large numbers to adjust well, to work hard and have history of compassion and welcoming culture from their own country.
I am truly thankful that I can call many of Syrians, Iraqis, Afghans my friends and family.
