Knowledge and Control: From the Telescreens of 1984 to the Smart Phones of 2019

Freedom and the ability to choose whatever path aligns with a person’s beliefs is a well-treasured right that is utilised by the citizens of modern societies. There may be however, a shadow that looms over and endangers the aforementioned right. The famously prophetic story of 1984 can never be more relevant than today. The story was finished in 1948 and took place in an alternative timeline after the events of World War II in 1984 which involves the unification of the United States, Canada, Britain, South Africa and Australia and that event is followed by a civil war within the unified superpower that is one by a new party known as INGSOC which imposes a dictatorship and heavy surveillance upon all of the unified nation’s citizens. In the light of recent events, such as criticisms of FaceApp, the AT&T lawsuit, and the 2016 elections, information control and theft are something that occupies the minds of a large portion of the world’s population. The possibility of a person’s entire past being preserved and manipulated arises with the news of his present existence being monitored, and it only takes a bit of imagination to see how such an ordeal can be detrimental to a person’s future and can complete the Orwellian prophecy: “Who controls the past controls the future…Who controls the present controls the past” (Orwell, 284).

The tribulations of the current era are largely multitudinous, but so are the distractions designed to alleviate the existential horrors of today’s endless disasters. In a way, this resembles the way 1984 sets up its society, albeit that instead of the pain of war, most people are more likely to distract themselves with the pleasures of the internet and online applications. That does not mean however that distractions of pleasure can not be used in the same way to monitor and manipulate the masses. A simple application designed to bring joy may have the potential to destroy the lives of many. The FaceApp phenomenon began in early 2017 but the popularity of the app hit a new peak in 2019, which was followed by controversy in regards to the privacy of the user and whether photos taken by the user get truly deleted or stored after being uploaded to the app’s servers. The fact that FaceApp was developed by a Russian company did not help considering the talk of Russian intervention during the 2016 US elections. The tension in regards to this issue rose to the point where a US senator sent a letter to the FBI asking them to investigate the app and furthermore, all 2020 presidential campaigns were reportedly warned by the DNC to refrain from using the app.

The terrors of invasion of privacy through mobile phones only seem to be increasing, and the vision of an Orwellian future may haunt the minds of the general public. The hysteria that follows debacles of such magnitudes can be seen most clearly with a simple peak at the Google Trends Chart for 1984 by George Orwell, where it can be noticed that the novel became more popular than it has ever been in almost exactly half a decade during the month where the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, got inaugurated after the Russian interference rumors. Interestingly enough, the last time the novel managed to get that much attention before the inauguration of President Trump was when the United States initiated the Stop Online Piracy Act which caused an uproar within the worldwide web as many popular websites such as Google and Wikipedia organized a blackout in protest to what they saw to be a potential attack on Freedom of Speech.

The relationship between cyberspace and dystopian fiction only seems to get stronger as even modern pieces of media explored narratives where artificial intelligence is used against the general public such as in “Terminator”. There is also the case of the infamous hacker group Anonymous, which orchestrated an attack in retaliation to the aforementioned online piracy act, who are well-known for the use of Guy Fawkes masks as imagery, an act inspired by the film and Alan Moore graphic novel, “V for Vendetta”. Often does art imitate the state of the world and society but the pattern that is seen in such art forms gives out a question begging to be answered: Could the paranoia of the modern age be merely the fears of Orwell’s war torn times reincarnated? If the assumption is correct, then how much have we truly moved past those times? One could only wonder.
