Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks with Emir of Qatar His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani/Canadian Days

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, about the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

 

The Prime Minister and the Emir discussed the situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, and the need for a path to secure lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians. Prime Minister Trudeau underscored Canada’s enduring support for a two-state solution, and emphasized the right of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace, security, and dignity, without fear.

 

Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated his call for the immediate release of all hostages held in Gaza, and reaffirmed Canada’s support to advance mediation efforts in the region, including those undertaken by Qatar. He also expressed Canada’s appreciation for Qatar’s ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages and ensure the exit of foreign nationals from Gaza.

 

The leaders shared their deep concerns with the ongoing dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, stressing the importance of upholding international humanitarian law, ensuring humanitarian access to the affected areas, and protecting civilians. They also discussed the regional security implications of the conflict and efforts toward de-escalation, including in the Red Sea.

 

The Prime Minister and the Emir agreed to remain in close and regular contact as the situation evolves.
