قصة النجاح لهذا العدد بطلتها الطالبة الجامعية غيد عصفور وقد حرصت جريدة أيام كندية Canadian Days أن تلتقي معها ومع عائلتها لتسليط الضوء على قصة نجاح هذه الشابة وهي قادمة جديدة وصلت مع عائلتها إلى كندا.
بداية نود أن نتوجه بالسؤال إلى والد ووالدة غيد، لنتعرف على طفولة ونشأة غيد، ومتى وكيف بدأت معالم النبوغ تبدو عليها؟ وحبذا لو تسلطوا الضوء قليلا على علاقة غيد بالمدرسة والمعلمات في بلدها الأم، سورية.
الوالدين: بداية نود أن نشكركم على استضافتنا على صحفات مجلتكم المميزة أيام كندية راجين لكم ولجميع القائمين على مجلتكم مزيداً من التقدم والنجاح. نشأنا في بلدة ريفية صغيرة (بلدة حرنة في مدينة التل) على أطراف مدينة دمشق. بعد الزواج سافرت إلى السعودية للعمل، وهناك درس جميع أبنائي وأولهم ابنتنا البكر غيد حتى المرحلة المتوسطة. وبعد انتهاء عقد عملي في منتصف 2013 سافرنا إلى أمريكا حيث مكثنا هناك ستة أشهر، ومن هناك تقدمنا بطلب لجوء إنساني إلى السلطات الكندية. في منتصف شهر يناير من عام 2014 وصلنا إلى الحدود البرية الكندية حيث منحنا موظفو الهجرة إذن الدخول إلى الأراضي الكندية.
أما بالنسبة لابنتنا غيد، فأنا لا أحب أن أسميه (نبوغ) وإنما هو استغلال للطاقات ودعم ومتابعة في البيت وخصوصاً من قبل زوجتي وقبل كل هذا هو توفيق من الله...
لا تستغرب إن قلت لك أن طفولة (غيد) كانت صعبة نوعاً ما، فهي لا تحب النقد والتوجيه وإنما كانت تحب النصيحة والتوجيه الغير مباشر (وأظن أن هذا حال معظم الأطفال) فأولادنا "جواهر ولكننا حدادون" حسب عنوان كتاب في التربية لأحد المختصين،
باختصار... المنزل هو الأساس.
كان لدينا (سبورة) في المنزل، وكنا نطلب من غيد أن تلعب دور المعلمة وأنا وزوجتي نقوم بدور الطلاب. كان لدينا مكتبة متنوعة في البيت وكانت غيد تحب القراءة والمطالعة كثيرا لأنها كانت تراني أنا وأمها نقرأ وندرس بشكل شبه يومي، لذا قمت بالاشتراك لها في مجلة للأطفال، وقد فازت غيد في عدة مسابقات في تلك المجلة وكان لها بعض الكتابات في تلك المجلة وهي لم يتجاوز عمرها العشر سنوات.
أنا وزوجتي لدينا يقين راسخ بأن الاستثمار في العقول هو أهم وأجدى من الاستثمار في القصور فلقد كنا نسعى دائماً لأن نطور من مهارات أبنائنا عن طريق تسجيلهم في دورات تطويرية ورياضية. باختصار... كنت أنفق معظم راتبي من أجل تطوير وتنمية مهارات أبنائي وقدراتهم الفكرية والمعرفية.
س: مرحبا بك غيد، نود أن نسألك عن رحلتك إلى كندا ومتى وصلتم إليها؟
غيد: بداية، أشكركم على منحني الفرصة لمشاركة قصة نجاحي غير التقليدية مع المجتمع العربي. كانت رحلتنا إلى كندا ليست الأكثر إثارة ولا أسهل رحلة. قضينا ما يقرب من 12 ساعة في غرفة صغيرة على الحدود الكندية في حين فحص بعض ضباط الشرطة أمتعتنا ودعا شخص بعد الآخر ليطرح علينا بعض الأسئلة. وكانت واحدة من أسعد اللحظات بالنسبة لي عندما قال ضابط الشرطة بأننا مؤهلين لدخول البلاد.
بكل صراحة، كنت مكتئبة لفترة طويلة بعد وصولنا إلى ميسيساغا، اونتاريو. لم أكن أحب مدرستي، ولم نتمكن من استئجار منزل بسهولة. والمغزى من القصة هو: حتى لو لم تبدو متفائلا في البداية، لا تفقد الأمل.
س: كيف كان انطباعكم عن المجتمع الكندي في البداية، وإلى أي مدى تشعرون بالاندماج مع المجتمع الآن؟
غيد: انطباعي الأول عن الكنديين كان عظيما. كان أول تفاعل حقيقي لي مع الكنديين، عندما ذهبت إلى مدرستي الثانوية للتسجيل. كنت أرتدي الحجاب الوردي المطرز بالزهور وعندما قابلت موظفة المكتب وعبرت لي عن اعجابها بوشاحي قالت على الفور، "أنا أحب حجابك !" لا أستطيع أن أعبر لكم عن مدى الامتنان والتفاؤل اللذين شعرت بهما من خلال كلماتها الجميلة. حقيقة أنها أثنت علي وتعرفت على اسم الحجاب في اللغة العربية وعبارتها تلك كانت كفيلة أن تعطيني فكرة كافية عن مقدار التنوع والإحترام الذي تعيشه كندا.
عندما كنت طفلة انتقلت عائلتي من منزل لأخر لأكثر من 10 مرات وكنا قد تنقلنا بين المدن والبلدان من قبل، لذلك أنا حقا قادرة على التكيف مع بيئات جديدة.
س: نود أن نسلط الضوء على قصة نجاحك الأبرز حيث تم اختيارك من ضمن اثنا عشر طالباً وطالبة الأوائل على مستوى كندا وقد تم ترشيحكم كما علمت لنيل منحة دراسية من جامعة غويلف الشهيرة، هل لك أن تحدثينا عن خصائص هذه المنحة والتخصص الذي تدرسينه والعوامل التي مكنتكِ من الفوز بهذه المنحة الدولية.
غيد: بالتأكيد! منحة لينكولن أليكساندر تشانسيلور هي منحة دراسية بقيمة 40،000 دولار تمنح على مدى 4 سنوات، لذلك فهي واحدة من أرقى المنح الدراسية في الجامعة. وهي منحة وطنية تمنح ل 12 طالبا فقط كل عام لأولئك الذين يظهرون التفوق الأكاديمي وخدمة المجتمع والقيادة. ويأتي ذلك مع العديد من الامتيازات. على سبيل المثال، استطيع إجراء بحث خلال الصيف مع واحد من أعضاء هيئة التدريس أختاره بنفسي في موضوع يهمني، وهي فرصة مذهلة أي طالب في السنة الأولى يحلم بها. وأنا مسجلة في برنامج علم السموم الطبية الحيوية، وهو برنامج فريد من نوعه متوفر فقط في جامعة غويلف. الآن السؤال الكبير الذي ما زلت أسأله لنفسي حتى هذا اليوم هو "كيف حصلت على هذه المنحة؟" في الواقع لا أملك سوى جزء من الجواب لأنني ما زلت أحاول معرفة كيف حدث هذا!
• أولا، كان نعمة من الله من دونه ما كنت لأكون ما أنا عليه اليوم.
• ثانيا، لقد سعيت لنيل الاستحقاق فعندما أحقق ذلك يصبح بمقدور والدي الحصول على جزء كبير من هذا الاستحقاق. ودون دعم والدي لا أريد حتى أن أتصور أين سأكون الآن.
كانت أمي هناك بجانبي عندما كانت درجاتي تتدهور في المدرسة وعندما لم يكن لدي أي قيمة للذات على الإطلاق. كان والداي يؤمنون بي حتى عندما لم أكن أؤمن بنفسي.
• وبصراحة (ودون تفاخر)، فأنا استحق بعض من هذا الاستحقاق أيضا! فمنذ وصولي إلى كندا في الصف التاسع، خصصت معظم حياتي للدارسة. أعود إلى البيت من المدرسة، آكل، وأقوم ببعض الأعمال المدرسية، والدراسة، وتناول الطعام مرة أخرى ومن ثم الذهاب إلى الفراش. وكان هذا روتين حياتي في بلدي طوال فترة الدراسة الثانوية. لم يكن لدي في الأساس أي حياة اجتماعية ولا وقت يذكر للأصدقاء أو أي شيء من هذا القبيل. كنت إما على مقاعد الدراسة أو في خدمة المجتمع. وأود أن أقول أن تلك الجهود أثمرت.
س: بالإضافة إلى التميز العلمي، سمعنا مؤخرا أنك متطوعة بارزة في الأنشطة الإنسانية. هل يمكن أن تخبرينا عن ذلك وعن البرنامج الذي تدعمينه؟
غيد: ما سمعته صحيح تماما! ففي سبتمبر 2014، بدأت تعليم الأطفال من مرحلة رياض الأطفال إلى الصف السادس في المناطق ذات الدخل المنخفض من خلال مشروع أسبير من قبل مدينة ميسيساغا، في Peel Youth Village
• من كانون الأول 2015 لغاية شباط 2016، تطوعت كرئيسة حملة لمؤسسة الأميرة مارغريت للسرطان. تحدثت في المدارس حول الوعي بالسرطان. وبلغت الحملة ذروتها في اليوم العالمي للسرطان في شباط 2016.
• في عام 2016، تم ترشيحي من قبل مدينة ميسيساغا لجائزة زعيم الغد. لقب يُمنح لشخص واحد فقط كل عام. لقد حصلت على الجائزة في حفل توزيع جوائز الأوسكار الخامس الذي عقدته شركة فولونتير إم بي سي في أبريل 2016.
• في أيلول 2016، بدأت العمل التطوعي مع Plan Canada وكانت ظيفتي زيادة الوعي بالصعوبات التي تواجهها الأمهات والأطفال حديثي الولادة في أوغندا وهايتي والسنغال ونيجيريا وغانا.
• بالإضافة إلى ذلك، أنا رئيسة بذور الغد ميسيساغا، وهو مشروع غير ربحي يقودها الشباب، مكرسة وقتي لجعل حياة الأطفال أفضل في جميع أنحاء العالم. نحن نجمع الأموال لرعاية الأطفال وتزويدهم بالتعليم والرعاية الصحية والغذاء المغذي والمياه النظيفة. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، يذهب جزء من عائداتنا لتوفير الإغاثة الفورية في حالة تفشي المرض أو عند حدوث كوارس طبيعية.
س: نود أن نسألك عن أهدافك المستقبلية وتطلعاتك على المستوى العلمي والإنساني. ما هو الحلم الذي تسعين لتحقيقه على المدى الطويل؟
غيد: قبل أي شيء، أنا طبيبة طموحة. ومتحمسة في مجال الطب وأنا على استعداد لقضاء السنوات ال 10 المقبلة من حياتي في السعي لتحقيق هدفي. لدي اهتمامات أيضا في البحوث، لذلك أود بالتأكيد نشر بعض أبحاثي لما لها من تأثير دائم في المجتمع العلمي والطبي. بعض الموضوعات أجدها مثيرة للاهتمام وأنا على استعداد لاستثمار الوقت والطاقة في علم الفيروسات وعلم الوراثة الجزيئي. وإلى جانب ذلك، أود مواصلة الدعوة إلى تمكين المرأة، والمساواة بين الجنسين ومكافحة التسلط والمضايقات في المدارس.
س: هل هناك أي نصيحة للمجتمع العربي بشكل عام والقادمين الجدد على وجه الخصوص؟
غيد: أود أن أقول لكل عربي شيئا أعتقد أنه حقا بحاجة إلى سماعه. لا تعيش حياتك كشخص آخر فقط لإرضاء الآخرين. لا تكون زائفاً. كن أنت. وحدد أهدافك، واعمل على تحقيقها. تذكر، أهدافك تأتي أولا، والجميع وكل شيء آخر يأتي في المرتبة الثانية. لو بقيت قلقة بشأن مطابقة وتقليد الآخرين فقط للحصول على هذا الشعور بالانتماء، فلا أعتقد بأنني كنت سأكون ما أنا عليه اليوم.
عمري فقط 18، وقد بدأت بمدرسة، وأمضيت أكثر من 1000 ساعة في العمل التطوعي، وأقوم برعاية طفل، والتقيت رئيس الوزراء في مبنى البرلمان، وتحدثت أمام مئات من الناس. ألا تعتقد أنه كان علي التخلي عن شيء لتحقيق كل هذا؟
س: كلمة أخيرة ترغبين توجيهها للمجتمع الكندي بشكل عام.
غيد: إلى المجتمع الكندي أقول، شكرا لكم لإنكم مثال يحتذا في كيفية تعامل الناس مع الآخرين. لقد مضى علي في كندا فقط 4 أعوام إلى الآن، ولكن أنا فخورة أن تكون كندا وطني. دعونا الاستمرار في العمل جنبا إلى جنب لنبين للعالم حسن خلقنا!

The success story for this issue is championed by university student Ghaid Asfour. The Canadian Days newspaper was keen to meet with her and her family to highlight the success story of this young lady, a new arrival with her family to Canada.
First we would like to ask Ghaid' parents about their daughter's childhood and the dmartness emergence of Ghaid, and when and how the signs began to shine? We would rather shed some light on Ghaid's relationship with school in her home country, Syria.
Parents: At the outset, we would like to thank you for hosting us in your distinguished magazine, Canadian Days, and wish you and all your team further progress and success.
Actually, we grew up in a small rural town called Herna, in Tal city near Damascus. After marriage I traveled to Saudi Arabia to work, and there all my children went to school till preparatory school. Mid-2013, we traveled to America. We stayed there for six months, and from there we applied for humanitarian asylum to the Canadian authorities. Mid-January 2014 we arrived at the Canadian land border where immigration officials granted us permission to enter Canadian territory.
As for our daughter's success story, it was a compination of energies and support beside home follow up, especially by Ghaid's mother and above all this is a blessing of God ...
Do not be surprised if I told you that (Ghaid) had a bit difficult childhood, she does not like criticism and guidance, but she likes advice and indirect guidance (and I think, this is the case of most children).
In short ... home is the foundation of success. At home we had a small library containing some books, and we were keen to add and diversify some new books.
We had a blackboard at home and we were asking our children to play the role of teachers and my wife and I were playing students.
(Ghaid) was fond of reading because she saw me and her mother reading and studying almost daily, so I encouraged her to become a member in a magazine for children. She won several competitions and had some writings in that magazine, when she was only ten years old. My wife and I have a firm belief that investing in minds is more important than investing in palaces. We have always sought to develop the skills of our children by enrolling them in development and sports courses. In short ... I spent most of my salary to develop my children's skills in intellectual and cognitive abilities.
Welcome Ghaid, we would like to ask you about your trip to Canada and when did you arrive in here?
Ghaid: First off, thank you for granting me the opportunity to share my rather non-traditional success story with the Arab community. Our trip to Canada was not the most exciting nor the easiest trip to be honest. We spent almost 12 hours in a small room at the Canadian border while some police officers checked our luggage and called one person after the other and asked us questions. It was one of the happiest moments for me when a police officer said we were eligible to enter the country.
To be very honest, I was depressed for a long time after we arrived to Mississauga, ON. I did not like my school, and we weren’t able to rent a house easily. The moral of the story is: even if it does not look optimistic at the beginning, don’t lose hope.
Q: How was your impression of Canadian society at first and how far do you feel being integrated with the society now?
Ghaid: My first impression of Canadians was great. The first real interaction I had with Canadians was when I went to my high school to register. I was wearing a pink headscarf with big flowers on it and when a random staff member walked into the office she looked at my scarf and immediately said, “I love your hijab!” I cannot tell you how grateful and optimistic that made me feel. The fact that she complimented me and knew the name of the headscarf in Arabic really highlighted how diverse and welcoming Canadians are! In terms of integration, I am a pro at it! My family had moved houses over 10 times when I was a kid and we had moved cities and countries before, so I am really good at adapting to new environments. My transition was very smooth and quick.
Q: We would like to highlight your success story; you have been selected as one of the top 12 Canadian students. You have been nominated for a scholarship from Guelph University. Can you tell us about the characteristics of this scholarship, your major and the factors that have enabled you to win this Grant!
Ghaid: For sure! The Lincoln Alexander Chancellor’s Scholarship is a $40,000 scholarship granted over 4 years, so it is one of the most prestigious scholarships at the university. It is a national scholarship awarded to only 12 students every year who demonstrate academic excellence and community service and leadership. It comes with many perks. For example, I get to conduct research over the summer with a faculty member of my choice on a topic that interests me, which is an amazing opportunity that any first-year student dreams of. I am enrolled in the Biomedical Toxicology program, which is a unique and specialized undergraduate program only offered at the University of Guelph.
Now the big question that I still ask myself until this day is “how did I get this scholarship?” I actually only have a part of the answer because I am still trying to figure out how it all happened!
• First off, it was a blessing from Allah SWT. Without him, I would not be where I am today.
• Secondly, I have been taught to give credit when credit is due and in this case my parents deserve a big chunk of this credit. Without my parents’ support I don’t even want to imagine where I’d be now. My mom was there for me when my grades were deteriorating at school and when I had no self-worth whatsoever. My parent believed in me when even I did not believe in myself.
• And obviously (and without bragging), I deserve some credit too! Since my arrival in Canada in grade 9, I have dedicated most of my life towards school. I would come home from school, eat, do some chores, study, eat again and then go to bed. This had been my routine all throughout high school. I basically had no social life and no time for friends or night-outs or anything of that sort. I was either studying or serving the community. And I would say that definitely paid off.
Q: In addition to your educational excellence, we recently heard that you are a prominent volunteer in humanitarian activities. Can you tell us about that and the program you support?
Ghaid: Whoever told you that was absolutely right!
• In Sept 2014, I started tutoring kids from kindergarten to grade 6 in low income areas through the ASPIRE project by Safe City Mississauga, at Peel Youth Village
• Dec 2015 - Feb 2016, I volunteered as a campaign leader for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. I spoke at schools about cancer awareness. The campaign culminated with World Cancer Day in Feb 2016.
• In 2016, I was nominated by Safe City Mississauga for the Leader of Tomorrow Award. A title awarded to one person only every year. I received the award at the V-Oscars held by Volunteer MBC in April 2016.
• In Sept 2016, I started volunteering with Plan Canada. Now, I am involved as a Youth. My job entails raising awareness about the barriers mothers and newborn children face in Uganda, Haiti, Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana.
• Additionally, I am the President of Seeds of Tomorrow Mississauga, a youth-led non-profit project dedicated towards making the lives of children better worldwide. We raise funds to sponsor children and provide them with education, healthcare, nutritious food and clean water. In addition to that, a part of our proceeds go to provide immediate relief in case of a disease outbreak or a natural disaster.
Q: We would like to ask you about your future goals and aspirations on the scientific and human level. What is the dream that you seek to achieve in the long term?
Ghaid : Before anything, I am an aspiring physician. I am passionate about medicine and I am willing to spend the next 10 years of my life in the pursuit of my goal. I am also interested and involved in research, so I’d definitely like to get some of my work published and have a lasting impact in the scientific and medical community. Some of the topics I find intriguing and am willing to invest time and energy in virology and molecular genetics. Besides that, I’d like to continue advocating for female empowerment, gender equity and anti-bullying.
Q: Is there any advice to the Arab community in general and newcomers in particular?
Ghaid: I would like to tell the Arabs something I think they really need to hear. Do not live your life as someone else's just to please others. Don’t be phony. Be your authentic self. Set goals, and work towards achieving them. Remember, your goals come first, and everyone and everything else come second. If I had worried about conforming and copying others just to get that sense of belonging, I do not think I would be where I am today. I am only 18, but I’ve already started a school, spent more than 1000 hours volunteering, sponsored a child, met the Prime Minister in his Parliament Hill, and spoken in front of hundreds of people. Don’t you think I had to give up something for all of this?
Q: One last word you would like to address to Canadian society in general.
Ghaid: To the Canadian society I say, thank you for setting the example of how people should treat others. I have only been in Canada for 4 years now, but I am proud to call Canada home. Let’s continue getting along together and showing off our niceness to the world!
